WAPELLO — Highland and Wapello had each played just one game this season before the two football teams met Friday for the Class A District 6 opener. Wapello had just lost to Mediapolis a week earlier while Highland had been off for two weeks.
The result was a 42-12 win for the home team Indians.
“Wapello was a solid team with some big lineman and they ran the ball hard,” Highland co-head coach Scott Morel said. “The turning point was they took control in the second quarter.”
The score was tied at 7-7 starting the second quarter, but it was 27-7 at the half. Wapello added two scores in the third quarter and Highland scored its second TD of the game in the final frame.
Connor Grinstead was 6-of-17 passing for 50 yards and both Highland touchdowns. he threw an interception. Brenton Bonebrake and Carson Nester each caught a TD pass.
“Issac Black and Owen Donovan stood out for us,” Morel said. “When were in the correct alignment on defense and sustained our blocks, we did some good things. We need to work on us making sure we continue to do the little things on both sides of the ball.”
Donovan had 105 yards on 20 rushes, returned three kickoffs 125 yards for an average of 41.7 and intercepted a pass. Black had seven tackles, including five solos and a sack.
