FAIRFIELD — The Trojan wrestling team needed to perform at the middle weights on Thursday night, and they did just that.

Fairfield took two big matches at the middle weights, and took three of the last four matches of the night, to outlast the Chiefs 40-33.

Trailing 30-24 after a tough loss at 138-pounds, Fairfield collected 10 points at the 145-pound and 152-pound weight classes. Logan Adam earned a 9-0 major decision at 145 lbs., topping Keokuk’s Kaleb Spurgeon. Payton Cline followed that with a 51-second pin over Keokuk’s Dakota Haage to all but wrap up the match for the Trojans.

“Pre-meet, we went over that,” Fairfield head coach Steve Miller said. “I circled those weight classes; 145, 152 and 160. I said, ‘this whole dual will come down to these three matches right here.’ They did exactly what you want leadership to do.”

Keokuk won the first four matches of the night, getting two pins and two forfeits from 182 pounds to 285 pounds. There was a double-forfeit at 106 pounds, and Fairfield won the next four matches by forfeit to tie things up.

In the 138-pound match, Keokuk’s Levi Boudwyn was able to turn Fairfield’s Dagan Burnett in the third period, but the duo of Adam ad Cline quickly erased Keokuk’s lead to put the Trojans up 34-30.

Keokuk’s Corey Skinner defeated Fairfield’s Caleb Heisel on a 10-3 decision at 160 pounds to cut the Fairfield lead down to one point, but the Chiefs had nobody to wrestle Arya Patel at 170 pounds, Patel won by forfeit and the Trojans moved to 1-2 in Southeast Conference play.

Both teams came into the meet a little short-handed, something Miller says his team always has to prepare for, especially in conference play.

“The thing with wrestling is, you show up,” Coach Miller said. “You don’t know if somebody is going to be sick, or somebody is not going to make weight, so there are a lot of variables in there.”

Fairfield will be back at it on Saturday when they head to Ottumwa for an invitational tournament.
