Cardinal boys drop Danville, girls fall

ELDON — With New London’s loss on Tuesday, the Danville boys basketball team would have been atop the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division standings, but Cardinal had other plans. The Comet boys downed Danville 52-45 in a conference home game. The girls fell 49-47.

The boys game was tight throughout, but Cardinal didn’t finish any quarter with a deficit. The Comets led 13-11 after the first quarter. It was tied 23-23 at halftime, and the Comets took a 36-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

Blaine Bryant and Dawson Lewis scored 10 points apiece for the Comet boys. Griffin Greiner and Elias Elammari had eight apiece.

The Cardinal girls led 9-8 after one quarter and 23-22 at halftime. Danville would grab the lead in the third quarter and take a 34-31 lead into the fourth.

Cardinal had the ball with a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but the Comets couldn’t find the bottom of the net.

Alexia McClure scored 21 points for the Cardinal girls. Kinsey Hissem had 14 to give the Comets two double-digit scorers.

The Cardinal boys moved to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the South Division. The girls are now 2-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Both teams will be at Central Lee on Friday.
