MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasnat senior Samantha Broeker signed her letter of intent on Friday to attend and play softball for Simpson College in Indianola.

“When I went there, it was beautiful,” Broeker said. “When we stepped out of the car, I was absolutely in love. Then when we met the coach, he was just so enthusiastic, and he wanted me on the team. It made me feel welcome.”

Broeker, who plays catcher and infielder for the Panthers, led Mt. Pleasant with a .400 batting average last year. She finished with 11 doubles, two home runs and 40 RBIs, providing a big power boost in the middle of the lineup. She’ll be joining a Storm team that went 21-19 overall last year and 7-9 in conference play.

“She’s a hard worker,” Mt. Pleasant head coach Troy Mears said. “This is the only sport she really concentrates on and she plays it year round. She really came around last year for us.”

Broeker will be studying Clynical Psychology when she gets to Indianola. She says she’s fascinated by the human brain.

Although she is signing as a catcher and will likely be playing behind the plate for the majority of the 2020 season, Coach Mears says her versatility is one of the things that makes her special.

“what’s nice about her is that she’s a great catcher, but she’s also versatile enough that she can go out and play the corners,” Mears says.

Broeker and the Panthers are just a few months away from starting practice for the new season. They’ll be coming off a 23-13 record last year.
