There were three local cross-country meets that took place Tuesday. Fairfield was at Oskaloosa for the Indians’ home meet; Hillcrest, WACO, Highland and Keota ran at English Valleys, and Winfield-Mt. Union, Cardinal and Van Buren ran at Central Lee.
Fairfield takes 5th, 6th
OSKALOOSA — The Fairfield girls took fifth place with a point total of 123, and the Trojan boys took sixth, scoring 127 points.
Freshman Malena Bloomquist led the Trojan girls with an eighth-place finish, crossing the tape in 22 minutes, 36.5 seconds. Makenzie Kraemer took 13th after crossing in 23:53.3, and Carley Seeley placed 19th, in 25:08.3, to place three Trojans in the top 20.
The boys were paced by senior Alex Forrest, who took ninth with a time of 18:37.1. Kaidyn Mickels also slid into the top 20 with a time of 19:33.2.
Bontrager leads area runners
NORTH ENGLISH — At the English Valleys Invitational Tuesday, cross-country teams competed.
Hillcrest’s Leah Bontrager was the top area finisher with third place in 22:42.
Davis County had the individual champions and won both the girls and boys team titles with 20 points each. Kenny Cronin, the boys winner finished in 17:04 and Macy Hill won the girls in 22:10.
Highland’s Taylor Sublette was 14th in 25:11. Jacob Roling was 27th in 22:27.
WACO’s Hannah Dennis took 49th in 32:22. Wyatt Dennis was 38th in 23:17.
Keota’s Ryan Larson was 59th in 26:33.
Hillcrest’s Julia Boller was 27th at 27:14 and Kennedy Roth 38th in 30:16. Will Kolck was 32nd for Hillcrest in 22:58 and Collin Miller 46th in 23:48.
Hillcrest competes next at the Center Point — Urbana Stormin’ Pointer Invitational Tuesday.

W-MU boys win at Central Lee
DONNELLSON — The Winfield-Mt. Union boys were all alone at the top in the Central Lee Invitational. The Wolves scored 44 points, 25 better than second-place Louisa-Muscatine.
Cardinal’s Gavin Grove was the top Union area runner in the boys race, taking second place in 18:18.41. W-MU had three runners in the top seven, with Dane Sweezer taking fourth, in 19:52.86, Lane Scorpil finishing sixth, in 20:20.99, and Gabe Hemsworth crossing in seventh, at 20:33.75.
Cardinal was one of two teams to score on the girls’ side. The Comets took second, with 58 points, nine back of the hosting Hawks.
The top Union area girl was Van Buren County’s Faith Neeley. She took second place, in 22:48.08. Teammate Katelyn McDaniel was 12th, in 27:29.16.
Cardinal had two runners in the top seven, with Alexia McClure (24:38.54) taking fourth and Allison Sloan (25:34.12) placing seventh. W-MU had a runner sandwiched in there, as Avery Maeder crossed in 25:31.68, for sixth.
