MT. PLEASANT — Eight employees at West Liberty Foods in Mt. Pleasant have tested positive for COVID-19 and an additional 41 employees “who could be at risk” have been placed on medical leave, according to a statement from the company.
The facility has “implemented Local COVID-19 Response Protocols at all its locations under which local response teams have been trained to identify team members with symptoms of COVID-19 and immediately take action in coordination with local health authorities to prevent spread of the illness,” the statement further details.
In the statement CEO Ed Garrett said the meat processing facility is “following CDC and local health department guidelines and procedures,” which prompted the decision to put the additional 41 employees on medical leave.
“Our first priority is the health and well-being of our team, and we will continue to take precautionary measures to mitigate the spread of illness.” Garrett said in the statement. All other employees at the Mt. Pleasant location were also notified of the positive cases.
The statement also notes the facility will “continue to engage in advanced cleaning and sanitation of all areas of our facilities, including any high contact points, every night,” as they continue operations.
