Mt. Pleasant inmate tests positive for COVID-19

MT. PLEASANT — A Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility inmate has tested positive for COVID-19, the Iowa Department of Corrections confirmed on Friday.

The inmate, an older adult male between the ages of 55 and 64, was put into isolation on Wednesday and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for testing.

On Thursday, UIHC reported negative results after administering two tests to the inmate, but later informed the prison that the inmate was positive for the coronavirus. The release notes the inmate “will remain at the hospital for care and monitoring supervision” and is in “stable condition.”

Currently, the facility is working with the Department of Public Health and the State Hygienic Lab to conduct testing for staff and inmates “to identify those that might be carrying the virus while asymptomatic.”
