Celebrating Veterans: Local Veterans Day events

As Veterans Day approaches, a host of events commemorating and celebrating the service of the brave men and women who have volunteered to protect our country are being held throughout southeast Iowa.

The City of Lockridge is holding its Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Lockridge Community Center. The event will begin at 8 a.m., with an opening statement and the firing of rifles, with taps that will be played after. Paul Corbin, a retired navy veteran, will address community members at the event. The Lockridge Community Center is located at 104 W. Main St. in Lockridge.

The Hillsboro Christian Church will host their annual Thanksgiving and Veterans Day Community dinner on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Hillsboro Christian Church is at 101 S. King St. in Hillsboro.

Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant will hold their 7th Annual Veterans Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 5:30 p.m. A meal featuring Old Threshers beef and noodles will be served to veterans and a guest. Quilts, handcrafted by a local organization, will be presented to veterans following the meal with a Quilt of Valor presentation. Patriotic songs will be performed by various music groups during the meal. The meal is free to veterans, who can RSVP to attend by calling the church at 319-385-8427. Faith Lutheran Church is at 910 E. Maple Leaf Dr. in Mt. Pleasant.

The Wellman American Legion Auxiliary will be putting on a luncheon for veterans and their families on Sunday, Nov. 10. The event will begin at noon and will be held at the Wellman Senior Center. The meal is free. Those planning to attend the luncheon are asked to bring a potluck dish and to provide their own table service. The Wellman Senior Center is at 223 Eighth Ave. SW in Wellman.

A Veterans Day Service will be held at the Blair House in Washington on Monday, Nov. 11, beginning at 10:15 a.m. The service will features a rifle salute and taps performance. A speaker will address community members during the service. The Blair House is at 205 E. Washington St.

The Mt. Pleasant Veterans Hall will host a service on Monday, Nov. 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Veterans Hall is located at 300 W. Monroe St. in Mt. Pleasant.

The City of Riverside in Washington County will host a service at the Veterans Park, beginning at 11 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Riverside Area Community Club and will features speakers and musical performances. The mayor of Riverside, Allen Schneider, also will speak at the event. The Riverside Veterans Memorial park is at 297 E. Second St. in Riverside.

The New London Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a movie showing in honor of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, beginning at 2 p.m. The VFW is located at 802 E. McKinley St. in New London.

Fairfield will hold its annual Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11, at the Fairfield High School Auditorium. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and the event will officially begin at 10 a.m. Sergeant Major Brent Krumboltz will speak to students and community members as well as Sergeant James T. Salts. Fairfield High School’s band and choir also will perform during the ceremony. Fairfield High School is located at 605 E. Broadway Ave. in Fairfield.

Iowa Wesleyan University will be holding an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 11 for the opening of the new Military and Veteran Resource Center. The event will begin at 1:45 p.m. at the university’s flagpoles and is preceded by a free lunch for veterans in Wesley’s Diner on campus at 1 p.m. Iowa Wesleyan University is at 601 N. Main St. in Mt. Pleasant.

Mt. Pleasant High School is hosting its third annual Veterans Day Breakfast on Tuesday, Nov. 12, beginning at 7 a.m. Veterans who are invited as a guest of a student or staff member will be treated to a complimentary meal. Culinary arts students will be serving made-to-order omelets and the high school’s Chamber Choir will sing patriotic songs during the breakfast. Students who are part of the Interact Club also will hand veterans thank you notes and cards. Mt. Pleasant High School is located at 2104 S. Grand Ave. in Mt. Pleasant.
