Wayland Lions Club meets

The Wayland Lions Club held a meeting March 17 at the Wayland Community Center. There were 10 members present.

1st Vice President Gary Lauger opened the meeting and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Lion Bob Meyer gave the Invocation.

The meeting resumed after a delicious meal prepared by Caterer Alice Hochstetler.

Secretary Bill Grimm read the minutes from the February 18, 2020 meeting; then Treasurer Terry Kaufman presented the Treasure’s Report and both reports were approved.

Vice President Gary Lauger questioned the status of the Flag Fundraising Project. Lion Braden Blake updated the members as follows:

• Lion Randy Morrow is picking up the equipment needed to start assembling the project from the West Branch Lions Club.

• One person has signed up for the Flag Project and two community members have voiced their intention to support the project.

• The committee was drafting a letter to be sent out with gas bills to promote and support the Flag Fundraising Project.

Following is the Flag Fundraising Project description article from the January meeting to remind the Wayland Communities of its intent and purpose:

“At the January meeting, Secretary Bill Grimm had President Kent Peterson and Lion Mike Quinlan present their American Flag Program of the West Branch Lions Club, used to raise money for their charities in West Branch. The program involves setting up American Flags for their town’s participants on 5 National Holidays during the year. A participant would purchase the plan for $35 and renew their membership each year for $35. A receptacle is placed in the ground to receive the American Flag before the Holiday and to be retrieved a few days later, to be stored for the next holiday in a central location. A cap is placed in the receptacle to keep flush to the ground for mowing. Their response to the program has been amazing and the rows of American Flags is a breathtaking show of Patriotism!

The Wayland Lions Club voted and approved starting their own American Flag Program, starting with this year’s Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020. Final details will be concluded at the Wayland Lions Club meeting on March 17, 2020. If you are interested in becoming a Charter Member of this program, present a check for $35 to Terry Kaufman @ Peoples Bank or attention of President Randy Morrow @ City Hall.

Lion Gwen Duvall received a check from Treasurer Terry Kaufman to Axis Vision that assisted a student in need of glasses. A Wayland resident requested assistance for glasses. It was noted that the Wayland Lions Club has supported an eye glass program to assist residents needing a helping hand and will continue to do so.

A procedure to cancel meetings in the future due to weather conditions or the present Coronavirus was discussed. A procedure will be taken under consideration and explained at the next meeting.

Due to the Coronavirus guidelines by the CDC, it was voted and passed to cancel the Annual Easter Egg Hunt this year.

Motion to end the evening’s meeting was approved @ 7:20 PM.
