SIGOURNEY - Fifth-ranked Sigourney-Keota set up a showdown for first place in Class 2A, District 8 with a 53-0 victory over Louisa-Muscatine Saturday which was called moments into the second half due to the 50-point rule.
The Savage Cobras (3-1 overall, 2-0 in the district) play at undefeated Davis County Friday night. Louisa-Muscatine drops to 0-4 overall.
Sigourney-Keota coach Bob Howard said his team scored on its first play of several drives, helping to account for its 47-0 halftime lead.
"Our defense played really well," he said. "They couldn't do anything and they were punting into the wind, so we got great field position."
SK scored on its first offensive play of the game, a 45-yard Nick Baker run. Baker carried the ball just three times but finished with 82 yards and a pair of scores. T.J. Greiner had another solid outing, pacing SK with 133 yards and three touchdowns. Dan Hammes added 63 yards and Derek Greiner rushed for 47 yards. In total eight different Savage Cobras carried the ball, and five players scored in the game. The Savage Cobras averaged more than 14 yards per offensive play while holding the Falcons to 1.9 yards per play.
"Everybody got to play, and that was a big thing," Howard said. "All the kids who had been working hard on the scout team got into this one."
