Theodore "Ted" Thornton, age 80, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at the Halcyon House in Washington.
A graveside service and interment will be held at
10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Elm
Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Kwang Song officiating. Military honors will be accorded. General calling hours without the family present will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements and will livestream the service on their Facebook Page. Ted was born August 14, 1940, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Rolla J. and Edna (Barr) Thornton. He graduated from Washington High School. Ted served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was stationed in Formosa (Taiwan). He was united in marriage to Alberta Zieglowsky Guenther on December 16, 1996, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Ted worked for AT&T, Roe Heating and Air Conditioning, National Gas Pipeline and retired as the Supervisor of Maintenance from the United Presbyterian Home. He was a proud Mason, Shriner and member of the Washington American Legion. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees. Ted was a handyman who would rather fix something than buy it new. He enjoyed outdoor activities and morning breakfast with his wife and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta Thornton of Washington, IA; stepson, Jeff Guenther and wife Debra of Ottumwa, IA; step-grandchildren: Grady Guenther (Sarah Parker) of Burlington, IA, and Hanna (Ryan) Summers of Ottumwa, IA; step-great-grandson, Finnigan Guenther; niece, Julie Cardin of PA; nephew, Michael Thornton of IA; and four great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Richard, Don and Larry Thornton.
